President’s Message

It saddens me to open with some very sad news. One of our past members, Bill Dunn, recently passed away. My most recent memory of Bill was of him slaving over the grills at our picnics. He was our BBQ chef at all of our Gore picnics for the last several years. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, who you may have had contact with because she ran the Appreciation Dinners for many years and his son, Larry, who is an active member of the club. I know I speak for all of us in wishing Barbara and Larry our condolences. He will be missed.

Well, this morning I was finally able to wake up and see snow. It’s about time.  First the plug—the 3rd Day Trip is scheduled for Saturday, February 4 at Sno Mountain. From members that have been on the first 2 day trips the ski reports have been very good.  Maybe all of the trails have not been open but the resorts have been busy making snow. The trails that are open have more than adequate coverage so you do not need to worry about bringing your “Rock Skis.”  The cost is only $75 for members and $85 for non-members. Please contact either Mary Lou Robinson or myself if you would like to go.

So far this year we have had 5 ski trips. The first was the New Year’s Trip to Lake Placid which I understand went well. The second trip to go was the 1st Elk Trip. I understand that they had made quite a bit of snow and the skiing was very good. The third was the week-long trip to Lake Tahoe. Even though it had not snowed, they had also done a very good job with snow-making and the skiing (green and blue) was very good. Friday, January 20 the fourth and fifth trips went. The fourth was the 2nd Elk Trip and, again, I understand that they had done an excellent job making snow. The fifth trip to go so far this season was the Italy Trip. They should now be eating the first of many Italian dinners. Apparently they had 15 cm of new snow today and the base is 50 cm and their website says that all of the lifts are open and the slopes are perfectly prepared.

Hopefully you have all been getting in shape because it appears that ski season may finally be upon us.

See you at the next meeting!
