RACE NEWS

For the race team, there were many positives during the season.  The two most important were that we had fun and all of us made improvements in our skiing.  As a team we finished in 6th place out of 29 teams competing with ASRA.  Considering that Wilmington is one of the smaller teams this is to the credit of the good turnout and good showing at the weekend races during the season.  During the course of the season Susan Maximuk, Elizabeth Strickler and Fred Forbes had several top three finishes in their age groups.

Our race season ended with the ASRA National Championships at Killington March 9 to March 11.  Several of the team did very well: Paul Fowser won first place in Men’s C, Beth Forbes won first place in Women’s C and Rich Zober won 3rd place in Men’s C.  Based upon improving their racing this season, Elizabeth Strickler moved up to Women’s B Division, Steve Zilli moved up to Men’s B Division and Fred Forbes moved up to Men’s A Division.  Mark Woodward raced at the Championships for the first time and did very well.

Besides winning Women’s C in the Championship race, Beth Forbes also won the Ironman Trophy for finishing the most races during the course of the season.

In addition to competing at Killington and getting to ski on world class ice, we had a very good time.  We had enough people for two condos.  The code of the mountain prevents relaying much more than we ate very well and Rich Zober had to guard his Turtle Fur neck gator.  Besides being very good skiers, Beth Forbes, Elizabeth Strickler, Paul Fowser and Steve Zilli are very good cooks.  Susan Maximuk’s deserts are worth eating your broccoli for.

We are always looking for people who are interested in trying racing and would be good teammates.  Besides the competition and excitement of racing, racing does help improve your skiing.  During the season many of the races are in the Poconos; but we also get to race at larger mountains in Vermont and New York.
