President’s Message

The April 2008 WSC meeting was a fun time with many members enjoying and comparing the various wines offered for the Annual Wine Tasting.  Many thanks to Rick Reeves, of Hockessin Wine and Spirits, for presenting such a great and varied lineup of value wines from around the world.  Rick is the Wilmington Ski Club's wine expert and we greatly appreciate his knowledge and expertise in the selections he chooses for the WSC membership to enjoy.

The WSC Race Team had a spectacular ski season this winter as they finished the season placing sixth at the American Ski Racing Alliance National Championship at Belleayre Mountain on Saturday, March 15, 2008.  A big thank you to each and every member of the WSC Race Team from the entire WSC membership.

Don't forget Point to Point on May 4, 2008.  The Wilmington Ski Club will be located at tailgating spaces #188 and #189.  Bring a food entree and beverage to share.  We will be loading for Point to Point at A.I. DuPont High School Parking Lot at 9:30 A.M. on May 4, 2008.  Ladies, don't forget to wear you stylish hats to carry on one of the many traditions at Point to Point.

Many of you have heard of the phrase, " Take me out to the Ballgame" and in the month of May, that is exactly what the Wilmington Ski Club plans to do.  The May 2008 WSC monthly meeting will be held the 3rd Wednesday instead of the usual 2nd Wednesday at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington for a Blue Rocks Baseball Game on May 21, 2008.  This is a family event, so bring out your family to attend a Blue Rocks Baseball Game with the WSC.  Tailgating begins at 5:30 P.M. at the location of the 2nd base east parking lot under the blue tent.  Bring a food item and beverage to share.  WSC will provide water and soda.  The game starts at 6:35 P.M.  Box Seat Tickets are $7.00 each and are limited to the first 40 people.  E-mail Mary Thurman with your reservation at thurmski@comcast.net no later than May 5, 2008.  Come out to see our local baseball team, the Wilmington Blue Rocks and have a fun evening with your fellow Wilmington Ski Club members. Bring your baseball glove along as you may just catch a fly ball.

Once again, it is time for the election of WSC officers. The names placed on the ballot are for the term of office beginning July 1, 2008 thru June 30, 2009.  Please see the ballot listing within the contents of the May issue of the Scrapings.  Take note that there is no one listed for the officer position of Secretary. As stated at the April meeting and within the April issue of the Scrapings, WSC is in need of volunteers.  Please, get involved. The Wilmington Ski Club is your club and you are needed, now!

I am looking forward to seeing you at Point to Point on May 4th and at the Blue Rocks Baseball Game on May 21, 2008.

The Ski Bum – Snow, Skate, Surf. Chadds Ford, PA • Newark, DE

To: Wilmington Ski Club

Recently I had been thinking of taking our 3 kids (14,13,10) on a skiing adventure, but wasn't sure exactly how to go about it as it had been 21 years since I had taken my last lift ride and the kids had never been! So, after talking with a friend of mine who suggested a "bus trip" from a local college or club, I Googled "Ski bus trip Delaware" and up popped The Wilmington Ski Club. I looked over the website and the day trips that were planned and found what looked like the perfect trip - Blue Mountain on January 18th geared towards beginners. I contacted the leader, Paul Domanski, who advised me how to apply for membership and sent in my check for what seemed like WAY too little money!!
As we drove up Friday morning (we live in Greenwood - about 75 minutes away) we weren't quite sure what to expect, but we were excited, and having spoken with both Paul and Harold, I felt that it would be a great experience.
Boy, was that an understatement!! All I can say is "WOW!" Deluxe transportation, breakfast on the bus, wonderful conversation with several members on the trip up just started our day! Upon arrival at Blue, Paul treated us like we were members of his family! He helped us thru the rental process (remember, I was about my kids age when I did this the last time!) and he just couldn't do enough for us!
We had a fantastic time! The kids all wanted to snowboard & I took skis. What a memorable day! (And yes - it is like riding a bike! I didn't fall once!)
Upon returning to the bus, we couldn't believe the spread Paul had laid out! Overstuffed subs with chips, drinks and all the trimmings! I kept thinking, "This whole trip for the 4 of us was under $125! How can this be???!!!"
But the best part of the day came from all 3 of my kids when I asked them how they enjoyed their first ski trip. They only had one question, "When can we do it again?!"
Thanks so much to Paul, Harold, and everyone else who helped make this such a wonderful trip. I was hoping that the kids would enjoy it - and they LOVED it! I have already passed along the club information to some friends of ours downstate and I am pretty sure that they will be signing up also. And we cant wait until February 9th to go to Sno Mountain!

Sincerely,
Bob Mitchell

Welcome to the Wilmington Ski Club website.

Yes…... We do love to ski and snowboard.

Why? We love the smell of clean, fresh mountain air. We love the beauty of the snow and trees. We love the thrill of challenging our bodies and minds as we improve our skills. We love the friends that we meet through skiing. What could be better than that? If this sounds appealing to you, please join us!
